Dual Living

With less land available, fewer rental  and increased living costs, many people are now looking to move in with family.

Stroud Homes offers many great dual living/dual occupancy options for people who are looking to merge generations under the one roof. It is also a great opportunity for investors who are looking to benefits from an extra income source.

In this blog post we ask Stroud Homes Northern Rivers to answer some common questions they receive from clients in regards to multi-generational living arrangements and dual living options.

What is extended living?

Extended living options can be under one roof such as a dual occupancy or attached granny flat designs, but it can also be two separate dwellings on different titles.

This can for example be a duplex build which can be attached by a common wall or de-detached but still be deemed as two individual homes.

What are the opportunities for families or investors?

These multi-living designs allow for more private housing arrangements when renting out for extra income.

It’s also perfect to use when you host visitors, using as a teenage retreat or have grandparents living at home.

It is more economical to build a dual occupancy style home all under one roof simply for the reduction in material costs and fees for council if on one title.

What are the most popular dual occupancy designs?

Where the land is zoned appropriate, we have found our Duplex designs to be very popular. We have built a big number of attached and detached Duplex homes in Lennox Heads recently, many customsied for sloped land.

They’re popular as clients get a two-for-one deal; two property revenues built under one project which will generate great future return on investment.

How long does a dual occupancy home take to build?

It really depends on the size and design, but often not much longer than a normal home design.

Come in and talk to our home builder Matt Lowson and our sales team to see what’s the best options for you and your family.

Can you build a dual occupancy home on a narrow block?

It all depends on the zoning, council regulations and estate covenants to what you can build, the height, materials and if allows a dual occupancy.

Can you build dual occupancy with attached granny flat?

Normally only two dwellings/living areas are allowed on one lot of land.

So, only certain existing homes would be allowed to build a granny flat later on under the right conditions and council requirements.
